Environmental protection with profit: ECOPROFIT (Ecological Project for Integrated Environmental Technology), which originated in Graz, Austria, is a collaborative project between towns or counties and locally-based companies. Its aim is to improve environmental protection, while at the same time reducing costs, using environmentally sensible measures.
In ECOPROFIT we provide assistance to the participating companies in three respects: in joint workshops, in which the environment managers from the participating companies present their experiences in the implementation of improvement measures and learn from each other. In the context of individual, tailor-made environmental consulting at the place of business of each participating company in order to develop concrete measures. And by providing regularly updated and practical material on environmental protection. The companies benefit from their mutual exchange of experience and information, improve their contacts with local government agencies, identify themselves more closely with their business location, and position themselves through public identification as environmentally conscious companies. ECOPROFIT companies are also ideally prepared for starting environmental and energy management systems in accordance with EMAS, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.

ECOfit and Nachhaltiges Wirtschaften are environmental consultation programmes sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector of Baden-Württemberg. It is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized companies from a variety of sectors and supports them in introducing an environmental management system, in recognizing improvement potential, and in reducing resource consumption.
In joint workshops, we inform participating companies on various topics of corporate environmental protection (e.g. waste management, resource conservation, energy savings). We also provide individual environmental consultancy to each company. After a site inspection by an independent commission, the promoter and the Ministry of the Environment , Climate Protection and the Energy Sector of Baden-Württemberg present a certificate to the company. The companies participating in ECOfit and Nachhaltiges Wirtschaften reduce their environmental impact, reduce their operating costs, benefit from the productive exchange of information and experience, and can improve their contact to local government agencies. The participating companies are also ideally prepared for starting environmental and energy management systems in accordance with EMAS, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.

Next to resource and energy efficiency, materials efficiency is an important factor in company environmental management. The potential for environmental benefits and cost savings can be systematically identified and analysed using suitable investigative approaches, such as materials-flow analysis. The aim here is to increase resource and energy productivity and reduce costs. The implementation of a company materials-flow management system provides companies the opportunity of promoting a continuous process of improvement process of their company environment-protection system, and of streamlining operations. Companies that have already introduced an environmental management system based on EMAS, ISO 14001, ECOfit or ÖKOPROFIT can make good use of existing structures and processes for this.
On behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection, we and a group of companies have developed a practical guideline for the implementation of materials and materials-flow analysis. The guideline is available for download from the Web site of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection.
